Udawalawe

Udawalawe National Park is in southern Sri Lanka and is known for its wild elephants, which can often be seen in open grassland close to the reservoir.

Wildlife

About Udawalawe

The open landscape makes it one of the easier places on the island to see elephants, often in family groups. Water buffalo, deer, crocodiles and many birds are also seen.

The nearby Elephant Transit Home cares for orphaned elephant calves, and visits depend on its schedule. As with all wildlife, sightings are not guaranteed.

What to see and do

  • Elephant herds
  • Birdlife
  • Water buffalo and deer
  • Udawalawe reservoir
  • Elephant Transit Home (subject to schedule)

Best time to visit

Wildlife can be seen all year. The drier months are generally best, when animals gather at the water.

How we arrange it

We arrange private jeep safaris, plan the best time of day and combine Udawalawe with Yala or the south coast.
