About Sigiriya

Sigiriya was built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa and later used as a Buddhist monastery. The climb passes water gardens, boulder gardens, the mirror wall and the remains of the Lion's Paw gateway before reaching the summit ruins.

Early morning is the best time to climb, when it is cooler and quieter. Nearby Pidurangala Rock offers a view of Sigiriya itself and is popular at sunrise or sunset.

What to see and do

  • Water gardens and boulder gardens
  • The mirror wall and Lion's Paw gateway
  • Summit ruins and views
  • Pidurangala Rock viewpoint
  • Nearby Dambulla Cave Temple

Best time to visit

Sigiriya can be visited all year. Mornings are cooler, and the dry months from around January to April are generally the most comfortable.

How we arrange it

We time your climb for the best conditions, arrange entry and a guide on request, and combine Sigiriya with Dambulla and Polonnaruwa.
