Kandy
Kandy is a hill city around a lake in central Sri Lanka and was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings. The sacred city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
About Kandy
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the city's centrepiece and one of the most important Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka. Evening rituals draw worshippers and visitors alike.
Beyond the temple, you can walk around Kandy Lake, visit the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya and watch traditional dance. The annual Esala Perahera procession, held in July or August, is one of the island's best-known festivals.
What to see and do
- Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
- Kandy Lake
- Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya
- Traditional dance performance
- Esala Perahera festival (July/August)
Best time to visit
Kandy can be visited all year, with the Perahera adding extra colour in July or August. The hills can be wet, so a light rain jacket is useful in the rainy months.
How we arrange it
We arrange temple visits at suitable times, cultural shows and a local guide, and plan Kandy as a base for the hill country.
