Galle

Galle is a historic port city on the south-west coast, best known for Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Southern Coast

About Galle

The fort was built by the Portuguese and greatly extended by the Dutch in the 17th century. Its ramparts can be walked all the way around, with views of the sea and the lighthouse.

Inside the walls are churches, old houses, small museums, cafés and shops, making it a pleasant place to wander at a slow pace, especially at sunset.

What to see and do

  • Fort ramparts and lighthouse
  • Old town streets and cafés
  • Dutch Reformed Church
  • Sunset walk on the walls
  • Nearby beaches

Best time to visit

The south coast is generally at its best from around December to April, with calmer seas and more sun.

How we arrange it

We plan your walk of the fort, suggest places to eat, and combine Galle with beaches and the rest of the coast.
